Buttercream is easily the most classic choice when it comes to wedding cake frosting and it is incredibly versatile. I prefer to use Swiss Meringue Buttercream and use it almost exclusively for my wedding cakes. It provides a smooth finish and can accomplish most styles while matching the overall theme and aesthetic of your wedding.
The tradition has it's roots in Ancient Rome, when marriage ceremonies ended with a scone like wheat cake broken over the brides head for luck and fertility. Then in the medieval days, the English starting stacking spiced buns, scones and cookies as high as possible, and the couple would kiss over it. When the bride cuts the cake, assisted by the groom, it represents the first task they will accomplish as a couple. Tiered cakes as we know them today, got their start in the late 18th century. History reveals that a London baker fell in love, and he wanted to impress his love as he proposed. He was inspired by the tiered spire at the local St. Bride's church, so he baked a tall tiered cake from that inspiration.
Weddings are full of traditions, and the wedding cake has a long history which has evolved over time. Since the tiered wedding cake was ultimately inspired by the power of love, it has become an adorned and anticipated element you will want to include as part of your wedding day.
